The stroke of midnight brings forth the new year! That's exciting! Or is it? Will it bring you new opportunities, new experiences......or the same old same old? Are you looking forward to the new year or fearing what it will bring? Is your mind filled with hope and wonder or worry and dread?
Every day in my social media feed, I see a variety of memes, articles, and even videos stating one piece of advice or another that is meant to help you navigate through your life and maybe even achieve optimum wellness. Have these tidbits of information inspired you to change your life, or do you read them and say to yourself - what a load of hooey!
Let's look at some examples:
We were born to be real...not to be perfect
I don't trust words....I trust actions
Don't judge my choices without understanding my reasons
You can't start the next chapter of your life if you're still reading the last one.
It doesn't matter who hurt you or broke you down, what matters is who made you smile again.
What about this one:
Skinny girls look good in clothes, fit girls look good naked.
Accept your body the way it is. You are unique and beautiful. You need to be a certain way. Be yourself.
There are literally thousands more out there floating around the internet. What is your understanding of each saying? Did you read one of these examples and think......yeah! That's true! Or.....did you read it and think: well obviously you aren't living MY life or become offended and lash out with a defensive comment?
It all comes down to perception. Your perception. Any one of these statements can be attacked...or defended. Learning more about yourself, why you think the way you do, why certain things trigger a big emotional response that lasts for minutes, hours or even days, and why some things have no emotional meaning for you at all is called introspection. It takes a great deal of courage to really take an honest look inside yourself and understand where you developed your opinions, ideas, and feelings.
You can't change things about yourself that aren't serving you well unless you know what they are, and you can't learn what those things are on your own. We simply can't be objective about ourselves and our feelings because feelings are more powerful than you realize.
You can only see things and understand them from your current perspective, so if you are feeling very strongly that people don't understand you or are constantly criticizing you, that is truly the only perspective you will see.
